Safety requirements on a ship
Blue Ocean Ibiza

Safety is one of the most important factors on board; enjoying a hobby with the certainty that nothing will happen to you is ideal.

Do you want to know which measures are compulsory during your crossing? We explain them to you!

Compulsory safety rules for recreational craft

According to the Ministerio de transportes, movilidad y agenda urbana, when going sailing you must comply with the following requirements.

For recreational craft, 7 different zones are established for which specific regulations on the equipment to be carried on board apply.

There are many different measures that we recommend you review in the following table, but those that do not depend on navigation zones are:

  • Portable fire extinguishers
  • Life jackets
  • Gas detector with light and sound alarm
  • Ventilation for petrol and electric propulsion
  • Petrol tanks
  • Anchor and chain

You can read more information about safety equipment on board on the MITMA website.

In case of collision

To prevent collisions and collisions, it is very important to keep an active lookout, both aurally and visually.

It is important to signal your location well by hoisting a radar reflector, using the VHF, and switching on your lights at dusk and in adverse weather conditions.

Check blind spots and observe the behaviour of vessels adjacent to yours.

Finally, never assume that the other vessel has seen you; especially on larger vessels, manoeuvrability is slower and vision is poorer.

Prevention of falls

Avoiding falling off the boat is easy if you follow the following recommendations:

  • Always hold on to the solid parts of the boat, and wear shoes with non-slip soles.
  • When moving around the ship, tilt your body towards the centre of the ship, and try to prevent the ship from moving.
  • In rough seas, use a life jacket and harness (if possible).
  • Don't run for cover.

This way you'll be safe on board!

Approval of marine equipment

All the equipment we have mentioned must be homologated, as this will ensure its correct functioning.

The type approval is a certificate that such equipment has passed all relevant tests and trials as laid down in a national and international standards.

We recommend that you always review it when acquiring new equipment.

Sailing recommendations

weather at sea

In addition to the obligation to comply with the measures we have mentioned, there are other things that can ensure a worry-free crossing:

  • Before setting off, check the weather information for the areas where you plan to sail; for example, in Ibiza the sea is not always in the same state in the south as it is in the north.
  • Performing checks on the condition of your boat and safety equipment on a regular basis is a good practice to ensure that everything is working properly.
  • Actively listen to the different channels of communication.

If you follow these tips, you will be protected at all times.
