Sailing or motorboating?
Blue Ocean Ibiza

Sailing or motor boating: which should you choose? We solve all your doubts.

If you like the sea and are used to sailing, you probably have your own sailing or motorboat.

Every sailor has his or her own preferences, but if you are going on holiday to a place that offers nautical services, it is a good idea to dare to try new things.

Or even if you are not a fan of maritime activities, one of the advantages of boat rentals is that you can ask an experienced skipper to accompany you, which will allow you to enjoy all types of sailing.

If you need help to choose one of the two types of propulsion that exist, in this article we explain the peculiarities of each one.

Advantages of sailing

barco a vela

It is the most traditional and oldest existing method of sailing along with rowing, so it offers a very authentic experience.

But what less obvious advantages does it offer?

  • It is a totally silent and unobtrusive way of enjoying the sea, as it makes no more noise than the crashing of the waves.
  • The sensation it provides is much more relaxing, as it allows you to enjoy the swaying and movements of the sea.
  • It has greater autonomy, as it only depends on the wind, which means it is more ecological and somewhat cheaper because it does not depend on any fuel.
  • There is not a lot of mechanics to maintain, so it is less delicate.

It is ideal to spend the day at sea in total tranquility, touring the coast or going to a special place to enjoy a good swim.

Don't miss out on this experience!

Disadvantages of sailing

Although it may seem difficult to find any negative points to this traditional and even romantic system, there are some disadvantages:

  • The crossings tend to be longer, as it is a more relaxed sailing.
  • You need a lot of experience and training to know how to deal with wind shifts and setbacks caused by the weather.
  • If there is not enough wind, you cannot sail.
  • More than one person is needed to be able to go out to sea, and in fact it is common to have a full crew depending on the size of the vessel.

Advantages of motor boating

There is a wide variety of boats within this category, such as open bow or cabin boats, semi-rigid boats, yachts...

But they all have a number of things in common:

  • They are faster, so travel will always be quicker and sailing will be shorter if necessary.
  • They do not depend on the wind at the time of sailing.
  • It is a relatively simpler system and does not require many crew members for correct operation (depending on the size of the boat).

This option is ideal for having fun jumping waves on the way, or if you don't have much time and want to visit specific locations.

They are also widely used for water sports such as wakeboarding, water-skiing or parasailing.

Go for something more exciting!

Disadvantages of motor boating

All the advantages mentioned above also have a negative side, as there is no such thing as a perfect system...

Some negative points of motor boating are:

  • Maintenance is more complex and must be carried out by a specialist, because the mechanics are more delicate.
  • It does not depend on the wind, but it does depend on fuel, so its range is more limited.
  • It uses fossil fuels, so it is more polluting, like all the motor-driven systems.

So... Is it better to sail or to motor boating?

There is no one propulsion system that is better than another, each one offers a totally different experience, and will suit one type of sailor or another.

If you like speed and action, or if you don't have much time to go out to sea, a motorboat is probably the best choice. It will also be necessary if you want to try some water sports, as we have mentioned.

On the other hand, if you want a more relaxed experience because you have time and want to enjoy the sea, a sailboat or a catamaran would be great options.
